On the Usefulness of Imperfect models : The Mercator Redemption

Talk

here’s another collaboration with Tim Carry at Contentsquare, I did a small talk (in french) about projecting a sphere in a plane, and why Mercator, the most classical method, is less boring than you thought. More generally, this is a good example of how an imperfect model is still worth using and exploring.

If you liked it, I can’t recommend you enough the website Mercator extreme by Drew Roos where you can try custom locations, and the publication “The mercator Redemption” By Sébastien Pérez-Duarte and David Swart which was the main basis for my talk.

Thanks Human talks and ManoMano for hosting this event, enjoy !
